Formally known as Prince Mateen of Brunei, he is the tenth child of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his second wife Mariam.
His mother was a FLIGHT attendant for Royal Brunei Airlines when his parents married. They divorced, however, in 2003.
In 2010, he was admitted to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where he graduated a year later.
He has three full siblings through his mother and eight half siblings through his father's other wives.
