British Chemist who won the 1964 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, for pioneering the process of X-ray crystallography. Later, through her innovation, she was able to decipher the structure of insulin.
She developed an interest in crystals at a young age, and her interest was further stoked by a scientist friend of the family, which culminated in her decision in high school to study chemistry.
Five years after winning the Nobel Prize, she was able to use her method to discover the structure of the insulin molecule - capping off 35 years of research.
She was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her father was an archaeologist and scholar.
She was commemorated with a Royal Society publication of 10 stamps portraying some of its most notable members, including Joseph Lister.
