Bebop and alto Saxophonist who performed music for almost his entire life with the likes of Charlie Parker. He also played with Toshiko Akiyoshi's quartet.
He started playing saxophone in the 1940s and performed often at the Three Deuces. He considered Don Byas to be his mentor.
He did not record any albums as a bandleader between 1955 and 2006.
In 1957, Stein married Shae Bevan and they were together for twenty years; they raised three children who all became artists.
While living in the Bay Area in the 1970s, Stein collaborated with Chick Corea.
