After earning a bachelor's degree and an MBA from Stanford University, he worked for both the McKinsey & Company consulting firm and the Hewlett-Packard computer company.
While on the faculty of Stanford's Business School, he earned a Distinguished Teaching Award.
He was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado. He later married Triathlete Joanne Ernst.
He and fellow author and speaker Stephen Covey both earned degrees in Business administration and wrote bestselling books informed by their advanced Business knowledge.
