Norwegian professor of social anthropology and a clinical psychologist who was one of the most prominent Norwegian academics of his time.
He traveled to Cornell University and studied with Victor Turner. He then received his PhD in 1970 from the University of Oslo.
He acted as curator at the Ethnographic museum of Oslo from 1969 to 1974.
He was born in Paris, France but lived most of his life in Norway.
He and Kate Snow both studied at Cornell University.
