Leading proponent of Danish Functionalism. Noted for his housing projects, but he also designed collegiate facilities such as The Danish Academy in Rome.
He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts beginning in 1909, during which time he was employed by such noted Scandinavian Architects as Anthon Rosen, Sigurd Lewerentz, Gunnar Asplund, and Hack Kampmann.
He served as a visiting professor from 1951 until 1957 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His parents were living in the Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, when he was born.
He was born in the same country as Writer Hans Christian Andersen.
