He portrayed Akiro the Wizard in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. He played Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
He studied theater at the Pasadena Community Playhouse.
In 1976, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in the musical, Pacific Overtures.
He had two children with his wife Shizuko Hoshi.
Like Steve McQueen, he was nominated for an Oscar Award for his role in the 1966 film, The Sand Pebbles.
