Honored as Boxer of the Decade in 1998 and inducted into the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fames in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He finished his career with a 38-10-2 record.
He won 43 of his 45 amateur fights and captured a Pennsylvania State Golden Gloves championship. He made his professional debut in 1983 against Tyrone Trice, a bout in which he was defeated.
He was deemed King of the Blue Horizon having fought on 21 occasions at the historic Blue Horizon boxing hall.
He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina.
As an amateur he also won the Sugar Ray Leonard Golden Gloves championship.
