The latter capacity saw him playing an instrumental role in advocating for stricter gun control legislation in Illinois. He was instrumental in revoking the pre-marital aids test and remained a leading promoter of the Gay Rights bill. In the early 1990s, he took retirement from the Senate to focus on his business endeavours. Eventually, he became well-known in the world of real estate in Chicago. He is still active as a Democrat and presently serves as committeeman of Central Committee of the state Democratic Party.
