Politician who held office as Prime Minister of Turkey from 2002-2003 and as President of Turkey beginning in 2007. Previously, he had served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He earned a PhD in Economics from Istanbul University and later received a law degree from the University of Dhaka.
He began serving in the Turkish Parliament in 1991.
His 1980 marriage to Hayrunnisa Gul produced two sons and one daughter.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced in 2007 that Gul would run for President.
