Americo Amorim was born on July 21, 1934 in Portugal. Americo Amorim was the richest person in Portugal when he died in July 2017. He spent six decades in his family's cork business, Corticeira Amorim, and invested in stakes in an energy company and banks in several countries. His grandfather started Corticeira Amorim in 1870; the company has dominated the cork industry ever since. Americo diversified the business from the port wine stoppers his grandfather began making to products such as cork composite board and furniture, and extended its reach from Portugal to the rest of the world. In 2005 he started Angola's Banco Internacional de Credito with Isabel dos Santos, the billionaire daughter of Angolan President Jose Eduardo Santos. In 2014 he sold his stake to Isabel dos Santos. At the time of his death, Amorim's biggest asset was an 18% stake in Portuguese oil and gas company Galp Energia, which he chaired until handing over the reins to eldest daughter Paula, a longtime executive at the firm, in October 2016.
