In 2008 he was featured on the reality television series Black Gold. Stephens founded the sole proprietorship Endeavor Energy Resources in 1979 after starting out with Humble Oil and Refining Company. He joined the Army Corp of Engineers two years later as a pipeline engineer. He moved to Midland, Texas and worked as a reservoir engineer at a local bank. He purchased public land rights and acquired several energy companies. Autry Stephens graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.
