Polish photojournalist best known for his work during the Spanish Civil War and with World War II refugee children. He was killed by machine-gun fire in the aftermath of the Suez crisis in Egypt.
He first began studying photography while at La Sorbonne in Paris and began working as a Journalist when he was twenty-two.
He co-founded the Magnum Photos cooperative and served as its President from 1954 until his death in 1956.
He grew up in Warsaw and Odessa with his parents and older sister. His parents were killed when the Nazis took over Poland.
He also shot portraits, including 35 of legendary Actress Ingrid Bergman.
