He began racing at a very young age, with his first competitions coming in the Guidonia Kart circuit.
In 1996 he joined Formula One, where he enjoyed a lengthy career.
He married Luna Castellani on October 10, 2009, and has three children with her.
While racing for Renault he has been teammates with Fernando Alonso.
