A Chinese-born American author, Greek cultural scholar, and archaeologist, he is known for such works as Athens and Castles of the Morea. His later works include The FLIGHT of Ikaros and Byzantine Blues.
He attended Harvard University after serving in the United States Army in Italy during World War II.
He earned Greek citizenship in 1975.
He married Nancy Thayer. They had two children before separating in 1968.
His wife was the daughter of poet e.e. cummings.
