He joined the PGA tour in 1959, earning Rookie of the Year honors after winning the Golden Gate Championship in San Francisco.
Among his accolades, he was inducted into the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame, and had a 9-hole golf course in his hometown named in his honor, as well as a collegiate golf tournament.
He grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he was the U.S. Junior Amateur in 1950.
Even among superstar players of his time like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus he was a fixture in tournament finals.
