Most famous for her 1979 work Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, this African American feminist and author also penned articles for Ms. magazine, Newsweek, and The Village Voice.
She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in literature from the City College of New York and a Ph.D. in film studies from New York University. She later taught English at both universities.
Her essays include "Michael Jackson, Black Modernisms, and 'The Ecstasy of Communication'" and "Anger in Isolation: A Black Feminist's Search for Sisterhood."
Her mother, Faith Ringgold, was a famous Artist, art Teacher, and children's book writer; her father, Robert Earl Wallace, had a career as a musician. She was married to Eugene Nesmith from 1989 until 2001.
Prominent Journalist Gloria Steinem hailed Wallace's Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman as a groundbreaking work that would shape American culture during the 1980s.
