Otto Beisheim was born in Germany. Otto Beisheim cofounded retailer Metro AG in 1964 with the Schmidt-Ruthenbeck and Haniel families. Beisheim owns some 10% of the publicly traded $89 billion (sales) company. In the last 12 months, shares have fallen nearly 50 percent due to a company-issued profit warning and the surprising departure of CEO Eckhard Cordes at the end of 2011. Beisheim manages Beisheim Holding Schweiz AG, which invests in Internet and technology companies. He also owns Beisheim Center, a high-end complex in Berlin with apartments, office buildings, two five-star hotels, shops and cafes. Beisheim maintains homes in Switzerland, Paris and Germany's Rottach-Egern. A former widower with no children, he remarried in 2008 to new wife, Lise Evers. During the winter, he resides in Miami.

2004

After the war, Beisheim went into Business. The first Metro Market, opened in November 1963 in Essen-Altenessen. On 10 January 2004, Beisheim Center was officially opened on the North West side of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, built for 463 million euros, and including the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott chains.

2009

In 2009, he sold 5.2% of the shares of Metro AG to various national and international investors; a further 3.1% could be sold. The WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, in Koblenz is named after him.
