British Labour Party Member of Parliament for the Newport West constituency. He began his parliamentary career in 1987.
He attended University College, Cardiff. Before beginning his political career, he worked for nearly three decades as a Chemist.
Fluent in the Welsh language, he often appeared on Welsh radio and television programs.
He was married for more than two decades to Anne Harvey, with whom he had two children. He wed Samantha Morgan Cumpstone in 1985.
He served in Parliament under Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock.
