Best known for inventing the shopping cart, he also contributed to the development of the supermarket. He opened the Sun Grocery Company, Oklahoma's first supermarket, in 1920.
He left school after the eighth grade. During World War I, he was stationed in France.
He introduced the shopping cart at the grand opening of his Humpty Dumpty supermarket stores in Oklahoma City.
With his wife, Margaret, he had two sons: Alfred and Monte.
Fellow inventor Joseph-Michel Montgolfier also created a famous basket: the seating compartment of the hot air balloon.
