Known for her bouffant and red-stained lips, she is a singer-songwriter who was first discovered thanks to her covers on YouTube. Her cover of Eminem's hit song "Lose Yourself" went viral. She eventually signed with Warner Bros. Records.
She attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where she fell in love with artists such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Etta James, Lauryn Hill, and Janis Joplin.
Stevie Wonder contacted her and said he wanted to work with her, but the timing never worked out. Wonder did, however, put her in touch with hard rock pioneer Adrian Gurvitz.
She was born in Spokane, Washington and raised in San Diego, California. She grew up with a sister.
