He studied architecture at the Pennsylvania Museum's School of Industrial Art. He began working for Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr., when he was 15. He was named chief draughtsman at Day & Brother in 1900, through which he would eventually form a partnership with Frank Miles Day.
