He attended New York University. Barely making enough to survive, he toured through Spain and France.

He married Ginger Gilmour on June 5, 1975. After their divorce in 1990, he remarried Polly Samson on July 29, 1994. He has five daughters and four sons.
He was a member of Pink Floyd with Roger Waters.
