German film and stage actor who became known for his interpretations of Brecht's work. He played Ui in Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui over 500 times.
He made his stage debut in 1947, and became part of the Berliner Ensemble in 1952.
He was honored with the Kunstpreis der DDR in 1959, and the Nationalpreis der DDR in 1962 and 1979.
He was married to Barbara Brecht-Schall and they had a daughter, Johanna.
