He first entered the industry as a dancer on Soul Train, which enabled him to audition for a role in the group Shalamar.
After landing a job to sing backup with Culture Club, he was able to land a recording contract with Arista Records.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Eugene and Ethel Stewart.
He was close friends with fellow Soul Train dancer and singer, Jody Watley.
