He apprenticed with a cabinetmaker and disliked it enough to ask to be changed to woodcarving.
He is best known for his works Queen Victoria, Supported by Justice and Clemency, and Hunter and Dog.
His father was a market gardener.
He and Howard Marks were both from Wales.
