She grew up surfing and much of her youth was spent modeling and painting. She eventually went on to complete a degree in communications at the University of California Santa Barbara.

Born in California to Charlene, a Hawaiian, and Jim, a California, she has two sisters named Oleema and Hana and one brother named Jason. She and Kelly Slater began dating in 2008.
