Kim Beom-Su was born on January 26, 1979 in Seoul, South Korea, South Korea, is Chairman, Kakao. "Brian" Kim Beom-Su hit the jackpot with KakaoTalk, which has tens of millions of users using it for gaming, shopping and chatting. In 2014 the free smartphone messaging service announced plans to purchase publicly traded Internet company Daum Communications in an all-stock transaction, thus avoiding an IPO. In January 2016 it bought a majority stake in music outfit Loen Entertainment. That same year the South Korean government classified Kakao as a large company, making it subject to roughly 35 antitrust and competition regulations. It's the country's first technology startup to make it to the big leagues. Kim, who grew up in poverty, paid his way through Seoul National University by offering private tutoring, sometimes skipping meals to save money. After finishing with undergraduate and master's degrees in industrial engineering, Kim worked at Samsung before founding online gaming company Hangame in 1998. He merged that company with another Korean Internet outfit, Naver, in 2000, creating NHN, which would come to dominate the country's search and Web portal traffic. When smartphones arrived around 2009, he hit upon the idea of creating a messaging service that would outshine utilitarian SMS texts. He launched KakaoTalk a year later.

1999

Prior to 'Bo go ship da' (보고싶다), another of Kim's songs, "Promise", from the album of the same name, had also been used for the popular MBC drama, Watch and Watch Again (1999), establishing Kim's staple image as a ballad singer. Critic and Writer Catherine Chan recalls the feeling surrounding the song as a 'sentimental lovers' favorite,' describing how the song 'had all the ingredients - a tender voice, lovely melody and dreamy lyrics.'

2001

Kim is the first Korean Artist to make a mark on the North American music charts, with his song "Hello Goodbye Hello" ranked at the 51st spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.

2008

Kim returned to his music career after he completed his military Service. His sixth album, released in 2008, was titled The Practical Usage of Sadness(슬픔활용법). While delivering several powerful ballads on this album, he also branched out into new genres, such as on the country tune "님아."

2014

Kim continues to do performances in several countries within East Asia, but also in other parts of the world—notably in North America, where Korean pop culture (drama and music) has skyrocketed in popularity within the last decade. Past events have been held in Hawaii, New York, Los Angeles, and Boston, as well as in parts of Canada.
