Rhode Island Democrat and member of the Kennedy political family who represented his state's first district in the United States Congress from 1995 until 2011. During his early years in the U.S. House of Representatives, he served as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
He attended Providence College and was elected at the age of twenty-one to the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
While in Congress, he fought for health care reform while serving on the United States House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
He married Amy Petitgout in 2011; they have sons named Neil and Owen, and a daughter named Nora.
His father, United States Senator Ted Kennedy, was the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy.
