French-born comic Artist has edited the art section of The New Yorker since 1993. She has won numerous awards throughout her career, including the Légion d'honneur, France's highest honor, in 2011.
She moved to New York at age of 19 and survived by taking on any job she could find.
She was named a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication in 2001.
She married the Cartoonist responsible for Maus, Art Spiegleman; the couple had two children.
She carried on the legacy of James Thurber, another respected Cartoonist from the generation preceding hers.
