Famous as the founder of the Oregon-based Fred Meyer, Inc. superstores (which later merged with the Kroger grocery chain), Meyer pioneered the all-inclusive shopping experience.
During his younger years, he operated a street-side cherry vending Business in Brooklyn, New York. He opened his first Fred Meyer store in Portland, Oregon, in 1931.
In the early 1970s, he absorbed the Valu-Mart franchise into his Fred Meyer, Inc. chain.
Born Frederick Grubmeyer, he grew up in Brooklyn, New York, as the son of a grocer. He was married to Eva Meyer from the early 1920s until her death in 1960.
In the early 1930s, he and Hendrik Meijer both established successful American grocery store chains.
