A Somali Novelist and Neustadt International Prize recipient, he is best known for his Blood in the Sun trilogy. His other works include From a Crooked Rib (1970) and Territories (2000).
He attended Panjab University in Chandigarh, India before beginning his literary career. His debut novella, Why Die So Soon?, was published in 1965.
