Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Jewish family, his father a Cantor from an orthodox background, and having his Bar Mitzva at an orthodox Synagogue, Zwick was educated at James Madison High School in 1958. He went on to graduate from Brooklyn College where he currently teaches in the School of Film. He directed twenty-one pilots, all of which went on to have successful runs as weekly television series.
