His career in the hotel industry began with his purchase of the Astra Hotel in Durban in 1962.
He opened the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut in 1996.
In 1980, he married Anneline Kriel, Miss South Africa and Miss World 1974, but got divorced 5 years later.
He also built a 6,000 set arena which played host to performers like Frank Sinatra.
